CAREER SUMMARY AND GOALS
Following a successful twenty-five year career within the semiconductor industry working for Intel Corporation, I was one of several thousand employees worldwide that were laid off. My last day with the company was June 24, 2016.
Rather than look for a similar position, I decided to initiate a second career; this one in the aviation industry. I anticipated that transitioning between industries as diverse as semiconductors and aviation would not be easy, and would take me far beyond my comfort zone, but aviation has always held a deep interest of me. In anticipation of my goal, I had completed a Master of Aeronautical Science degree at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and hoped to leverage the degree in my new career.
A career change is not for the faint of heart, nor easily managed. It took me until February 2017 to secure a new position. I accepted a position as a Crew Scheduler I with Spirit Airlines at their company headquarters in Miramar, Florida and relocated. Unfortunately, I quickly found myself extremely homesick for my dogs and the desert. Rather than prolong the inevitable, I packed up my trusty Jeep Wrangler and moved back to Arizona, where I secured a position as a Senior Records Analyst with Mesa Airlines in Phoenix, Arizona. Several months later (November 2017, to be exact), I accepted a Customer Relations Representative position with American Airlines in Tempe, Arizona.
As expected, switching career paths and industries was not an easy journey, but the experience I gained during that period was invaluable. However, I had to acknowledge that continuing to pursue a long-term career in the aviation industry was not feasible given other life circumstances that were occurring, so I reluctantly began looking for another job outside of the aviation industry.
Switching career paths again was equally difficult. I had invested a lot of time and energy breaking into the aviation industry so it was soul-wrenching having to back-pedal on that effort. As a result, I switched constantly between looking at opportunities outside of the aviation industry and at opportunities within the aviation industry, and constantly weighed my options. In the end, I secured a Curriculum Developer Specialist position with OnTrac at their corporate headquarters in Chandler, Arizona.
My life between June 24, 2016 and January 7, 2019, proved to be quite the ride. While I may regret specific instances of the overall experience (and wish I could redo others), I'm glad that I had the opportunity to break out of the career rut that I had been in. I met some fascinating people, learned a lot about myself, and I got to experience the inner workings of the aviation industry.
